Okay so this is massively outdated. The Webby Awards, which recognize online excellence, were held in early June. Here’s a listing of this year’s winners.
What’s great about the Webbys is that everyone is limited to five words in their acceptance speeches. No exceptions. Here are some of my favorites from this year’s event:
“Wait, we didn’t charge anything?” – Trent Reznor, Webby Artist of the Year
“Thank God Conan got promoted.” – Jimmy Fallon, Webby Person of the Year Read more
I know I’m a total nerd. But not everybody is quite as geeky as I am, and you might not know about Diggnation. It’s one of the most popular internet shows, and is distributed by podcast network Revision 3. In the show, two guys talk about some of the most popular stories on social news Web site Digg.com. The hosts are Kevin Rose, one of the founders of Digg, and Alex Albrecht, a former Tech TV host and friend of Kevin.
The two of them recently went on Jimmy Fallon’s new late night talk show and pretty much took over the whole thing. They were funny, self-deprecating and interesting.
For a couple guys who usually film sitting on a couch at home, with two cameras, they didn’t seem nervous at all to be on national TV. Of course, they have some practice with an audience; their live Diggnation shows are extremely popular and well attended.
Check out this video to see Kevin and Alex on the show, which also gives you an idea of what Diggnation is like. Then head on over to Revision 3 and download some episodes. They’re free, so you’ve got nothing to lose.
I’m really disappointed the Cardinals didn’t win the Super Bowl, but at least the commercials were entertaining. Of course, they couldn’t match the excitement of the last few minutes of the game. Below, I talk about a few of the commercials I noticed – some good, some bad.
Though I’m not crazy about the stereotypical complaining wife, I thought this commercial for Bridgestone Tires featuring Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head was clever. I especially liked Mrs. Potato Head’s switch to angry eyes at the end.
I watched “Hogfather” for the first time this weekend, and I forgot how much I love Death. I can’t think of another Discworld character I like better – though I love the City Watch. Guess I need to go get ‘Guards! Guards!‘ – I’m still making my way through the older books (I read several of the newer ones then started over at the beginning).
Anyway, I really enjoyed Death’s reaction to the socio-economic rules of holiday gifts – I’ve always wondered how poor kids feel when they hear their well-off classmates talk about the bikes and video game systems Santa leaves.
The Emmys were on again this weekend, and being a huge fan of television, I of course watched them. Now, I should know better. They always get me all worked up, and I get so tired of the same people winning year after year.
There were, however several things I liked about this year’s award show. In no particular order, they are:
1. Ricky Gervais. The British actor won for his work in “Extras” last year and wasn’t at the ceremony to accept his award, so presenters Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert “gave” it to Steve Carrell. This year, Gervais repeatedly appealed to Carrell to return the award, saying “I bet you haven’t even seen ‘Ghost Town.’ I sat through ‘Evan Almighty’; give me my Emmy.” Will the Academy please hire Gervais to host next year?
